During the 2022 Tengchong Scientists Forum, academicians Gu Binglin, Xu Zhihong, and Rao Zihe proposed the establishment of the Tengchong Science Awards, aiming to reward global scientists who have made significant breakthroughs in the forefront of science and technology, promoted significant progress in human scientific and technological advancements, solved major human problems and challenges through technological innovation, and achieved significant economic or social benefits through research outcomes. The plan is to select 1-3 individuals (or teams) for awards each time, with each awardee receiving $1.5 million or 10 million yuan. In 2023, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, foreign academician of the National Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the Royal Society, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and President of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, Lu Yiming, and academician of the National Academy of Sciences, foreign academician of the National Academy of Sciences, fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, fellow of the National Academy of Medicine, molecular biologist Zhang Feng were awarded the inaugural Tengchong Scientists Award.
