This guide has been developed to assist nominators and nominees in understanding the conditions, procedures, and points of attention regarding the nomination for the Tengchong Science Award.


 I. About the Tengchong Science Award

1. Introduction

The Tengchong Science Award is a non-profit award jointly initiated by Academician Gu Binglin (former President of Tsinghua University), Academician Xu Zhihong (former President of Peking University), and Academician Rao Zihe (former President of Nankai University). The award aims to encourage scientists to pursue truth, pioneer innovations, achieve significant breakthroughs in key scientific fields, and make outstanding contributions to human societal development.

2. Award Focus

The Tengchong Science Award primarily focuses on fields such as "Biomedicine and Medicine," "Agriculture and Environmental Ecology" (including biodiversity, ecological environment, modern agriculture), and "Technology and Information Science" (including new materials, green energy, advanced manufacturing, digital economy, and artificial intelligence). It covers natural sciences, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and interdisciplinary fields. The award recognizes scientists worldwide who have made significant breakthroughs at the scientific frontier, advanced human scientific knowledge, addressed major global challenges through technological innovation, or produced major economic or social benefits through their research.

3. Award Details

The award will be granted to 1 to 3 individuals (or teams), with specific numbers determined by the nomination and final evaluation process. Each winner (or team) will receive a prize of USD 1.5 million or RMB 10 million. If multiple winners are selected in the same category, up to three individuals (or teams) can share a single prize. The award ceremony is planned for the opening of the 2024 Tengchong Scientists Forum.


II. Nomination Process

1. Nomination Invitation

The Tengchong Science Award operates on an invitation-based nomination system; self-nominations are not accepted. Nominators primarily include winners of major global awards, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and renowned experts and scholars from prestigious universities, research institutions, and international academic organizations. Information on nominees and other nomination-related details may be made public within a specified period.

2. Nomination Requirements

1. Each nominator may submit one nomination per year, recommending either one individual or one team (with no more than three members). The nominator must also recommend 3 to 5 renowned experts who are familiar with the nominee. Each nomination is valid for three years.

2. Nominations may be submitted jointly by multiple nominators.

3. Nominees cannot simultaneously serve as evaluators.

3. Nominee Requirements

1. The nominee’s scientific achievements must be widely recognized domestically and internationally or have made significant contributions to scientific progress.

2. Nominees must not have previously won major international awards such as the Nobel Prize, Turing Award, or Fields Medal.

3. Individuals under the following circumstances are ineligible for nomination:

1. Disputes over intellectual property rights, the roles of contributors, or other related matters that remain unresolved.

2. Projects that require specific permits under legal regulations due to concerns about personal safety, national security, or public interests, and have not yet received approval.

3. Any nominee found to have committed academic misconduct or provided false information during the selection process will be disqualified and barred from being nominated for the next three years.

4. Submission of Nomination Materials

Nomination materials should be submitted via email to award@tsfcenter.cn by 24:00 (GMT+8) on September 15, 2024. Relevant details will be published on the Tengchong Scientists Forum official website: [http://www.tsfcentre.com/index.htm](http://www.tsfcentre.com/index.htm).


III. Required Materials

Nominees must submit a Nomination Form for the Tengchong Science Award, which can be completed in either Chinese or English and includes the following:

1. Nominator’s resume.

2. Support letters: Each nominator must submit a support letter for the nominee (or team). Multiple joint nominators may submit an unlimited number of support letters.

3. Nominee-related documents:

1. Personal information, education, and work experience.

2. Academic achievements, research projects, and representative works.

3. Other relevant documents that may support the nominee, including but not limited to autobiographies, publications, certificates, media reports, etc.


IV. Selection Process

1. Preliminary Review

The Selection Committee Office will conduct a preliminary review of the nomination materials.

2. Peer Review

Experts in the fields of Biomedicine and Medicine, Agriculture and Environmental Ecology, and Technology and Information Science will be invited to review the nomination materials.

3. Meeting Review

Based on the peer review results, domestic and international experts will select no more than 10 candidates (or teams) for the first round of meeting review. The second round will narrow this down to no more than three winners (or teams).

4. Final Review and Announcement

The Tengchong Science Award Selection Committee will confirm the final winners. The results will be publicly announced during the 2024 Tengchong Scientists Forum.


V. Guidelines for Award Recipients

1. Award recipients must agree to attend the Tengchong Science Award ceremony during the 2024 Tengchong Scientists Forum.

2. Recipients agree that their photographs, videos, and written materials related to the Tengchong Science Award may be used for promotional purposes in publications and media worldwide, including print, television, internet, outdoor displays, corporate publications, and exhibitions.

3. Recipients authorize the use of their likeness for the Tengchong Science Award and related promotional activities.

4. Recipients will not receive any additional compensation for participating in these promotional activities.

5. The Tengchong Science Award selection process values honesty and transparency, respecting the privacy and data security of all nominees.


VI. Points of Attention

1. Nomination materials must not contain any content that violates laws or regulations, or includes classified or sensitive information. Nominees are responsible for the authenticity and legality of the materials submitted and must avoid plagiarism or falsification.

2. Nominees must adhere to relevant national laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines concerning research ethics and scientific safety (e.g., biosafety, information security).

3. Nominees must comply with the rules and regulations of their respective institutions.

4. Nominees must not interfere with or attempt to influence the award selection process. Any such actions, if discovered, will disqualify the nominee for the next three years.


VII. Other Matters

The Tengchong Science Award Selection Committee is responsible for interpreting these guidelines.
