Review: Satellite Conference on Biodiversity Conservation and Regional High-Quality Development (Nujiang) Successfully Concluded

From April 19th to 20th, 2025, the Tengchong Scientists Forum 2025 · Biodiversity Conservation and Regional Quality Development (Nujiang) Satellite Conference successfully concluded in Lushui City, Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, with the theme of "Conserving Biodiversity, Empowering Ecological Value Transformation through Science and Technology, and Promoting Regional High-Quality Development". The event focused on empowering biodiversity conservation and high-quality development through scientific and technological innovation, conducting academic exchanges, cooperation matchmaking, and investment promotion, and facilitated the signing and implementation of 13 projects in Nujiang.

Highlights of the Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony featured a lineup of distinguished guests, including Wang Xueqin, Member of the Leading Party Members Group of the Yunnan Provincial People's Government and Director of the Tengchong Scientists Forum Organizing Committee, who attended the event. Gao Jun, Secretary of the Leading Party Members Group and Director of the Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Department, as well as Director of the Tengchong Scientists Forum Organizing Committee Office, presided over the ceremony. Xu Zhihong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former President of Peking University, and Co-chair of the Tengchong Scientists Forum, and Hong Weizhi, Secretary of the Nujiang Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party of China, delivered opening speeches respectively. Renowned experts, scholars, entrepreneurs, and investors in the fields of biology, ecology, and environmental science participated in the opening ceremony.

As the province with the richest biodiversity in China, Yunnan unwaveringly pursues a path of ecological priority and green development, attaching great importance to biodiversity conservation, ecological governance, and the conversion and utilization of biological resources. Through institutional innovation, science and technology empowerment, and industrial transformation, Yunnan has gradually explored a sustainable development path featuring priority protection and orderly development. The Tengchong Scientists Forum provides an important platform for people from all walks of life to jointly explore and promote the integration of scientific and technological innovation and industrial innovation. It is hoped that the Nujiang event will lead to innovative cooperation and produce a batch of landmark scientific and technological achievements and industrial outcomes.

Signing of Selected Projects

Li Wenhui, Deputy Secretary of the Nujiang Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party of China and Governor of the Nujiang Prefectural People's Government, presented the "Introducing Science and Technology into Nujiang, Attracting Talents and Investments" promotion, introducing multiple projects in Nujiang, such as the World's Most Beautiful Grand Canyon Tourism Supporting Service Center, the Full Industrial Chain Development of Chinese Herbal Medicines in Fugong County, and the Low-Salt Ecological Ham Industrialization of Gaoligong Mountain Pigs, from the aspects of ecological biological resources and characteristic industrial resources. It is hoped that by taking the "Xinggu Talent Support Plan" as the guide, top scientific research forces can be gathered to accelerate the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and jointly promote the rapid economic and social development of Nujiang.

Keynote Reports Focusing on Frontier Topics

Five academicians successively delivered keynote reports

Zhang Yaping presented a keynote report titled "The Practice and Development of China's Man and Biosphere Programme," introducing advancements in the value of biosphere reserves and wildlife research and monitoring.

 Sun Hang delivered a keynote report titled "The Current Status and Future of Yunnan's Plant Diversity," reviewing and analyzing Yunnan's highlights and achievements in cross-border biodiversity conservation and germplasm resource bank construction.

 Zhu Youyong presented a keynote report titled "Agricultural Biodiversity and the Development of Yunnan's Characteristic Agriculture," introducing the good benefits of Yunnan's winter potato industry in terms of high commerciality and strong stability. 

He Kebin delivered a keynote report titled "Carbon Neutrality: Addressing the Ecological and Environmental Crisis in the Context of Global Change," proposing factors that may affect biodiversity for reference. 

Zhu Zhaoyun presented a keynote report titled "Ecological Civilization and Natural Medicines: The Case of Yunnan in China's Low-Latitude Plateau Region," introducing plant medicines nurtured under Yunnan's unique ecological conditions.

Diverse Activities Empowering Regional High-Quality Development through Science and Technology

In addition to the opening ceremony and keynote reports, the event also simultaneously conducted four parallel sessions on "Biodiversity Conservation and National Park Construction," "Biodiversity Conservation and Carbon Value Conversion, as well as Green Financial Development," "Biodiversity Conservation and Industrial High-Quality Development," and "Biodiversity Conservation and High-End Tourism Development." Participants engaged in academic discussions, delving into specific measures for biodiversity conservation, the sustainable utilization of regional resources, development models for ecological industries, and development paths for high-end tourism products.

The event also featured a series of activities, including investment promotion sessions focused on "Valley Characteristic Agriculture" and "New-Quality Productivity," as well as sessions on the high-quality development of Nujiang's Tsaoko and premium coffee industries. These activities integrated the intellectual and resource support of academicians, professors, universities, and enterprises, accelerating the promotion of the "Ecological Restoration + Green Industry" model in Nujiang.

The 2025 Tengchong Scientists Forum · Biodiversity Conservation and Regional Quality Development (Nujiang) Satellite Conferencewas hosted by the Tengchong Scientists Forum Organizing Committee Office and the People's Government of the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, and organized by the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Yunnan Academy of Environmental Sciences, the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Yunnan Tourism Planning and Research Institute, and Huadian Yunnan Power Generation Co., Ltd.

The successful holding of this event not only established a high-level exchange and cooperation platform for biodiversity conservation and high-quality development in Nujiang Prefecture but also injected new vitality into promoting the coordinated development of the regional economy and ecological environment. Looking ahead, the Tengchong Scientists Forum will continue to lead with scientific and technological innovation, build high-level dialogue platforms, promote scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation, and contribute wisdom and strength to building a beautiful China.
